If you let it get flat, it might not charge again and will need replacement.

The closest thing we have to a charge and forget battery is a lithium ion, or li-on. The kind that is used in the RC. They can be left stored fully charged but even those self discharge over time, but at a lower rate. Camera makers love them for that reason. So don't be afraid to fully charge them and leave them. They are not smart batteries and have no need to be put into storage.
