Hey everyone,

I have been flying DJI since I started droning a few years ago and I have to admit, the Evo is really calling to me. I have a P3 4K and Mavic Pro right now but thinking of replacing my Mavic Pro with an Evo. Wondering if anyone else has made this move and what your experience has been. One sticking point I have though, is that I prefer to fly with my iPad mini 4 and I can't find out if the stock controller clamp will hold it or if there is any good accessory to allow this. Otherwise, the camera looks to be a good bit better and honestly, I like the looks better (minor and really not important, but yeah...).

Thanks for your input!

Been there, done that, and I couldn't be happier. My EVO has zero, zilch problems, flies like a dream, and is totally without the NFZ hassles I had with the DJI bird. I could go on about lack of horizon tilt, excellent range, built-in visual display in the controller, etc., but that would sound like I was biased (grin).

As far as the iPad, I can't comment, but I (and several others) have made very simple adaptors that will accommodate tabs of just about any size. Just be aware bigger is not always better, 'cause the controller has no lanyard hook and a large (more than 8") tab makes the whole setup a bit top heavy.

Congrats! Hope you get an EVO and love it. I came to Autel after having a Phantom 3 Standard...bought an X-Star and never looked back. I've never flown a Mavic but I can tell you I've been very happy with my EVO. Autel did piss a lot of folks off with their broken promises on the X-Star (interchangeable cameras, releasing SDK, loooong delay on releasing the EVO with very little news) but they make great drones and the limited experience Ive had with their customer service has been great (unlike my experience with DJI.) Come on over to the orange side - we're happy to have you!!

Thanks for the kind words, gofer fan! I have generally been happy with my DJI products, but I just see lots of limitations too and a lot of over-controlling the user experience. I really love what I'm seeing with the Evo and I wish i could test fly one before I bite the bullet but from what I am seeing I think I would be very happy with it. I love my Mavic but honestly I would prefer a better camera so that's a big driver.

I've been trying to find out one little detail and getting conflicting answers so maybe you can help me... I use an iPad mini 4 with my Mavic and would like to use it with my Evo, should I get one. I have read the Evo controller mount opens to 5.6" which would be perfect as the iPad mini is 5.3" wide. But I don't have a way to actually measure one to be sure. Any chance you have this info on the width of the controller bracket?

Thank you again! You will probably see me in here with my new orange colors soon!

I'm at work right now, but am off in a couple hours. If nobody beats me to it, I'll take a measurement for you when I get home.

OK. Measured it at max width and it came in just under 3.5". Was surprised it was that small but then put my phone in it and saw my LG V30 had it extended almost to the max. So it's likely gonna be to small for your iPad. 20180803_000656_HDR.jpg
There are some threads on here though that show some creative solutions people have come up with. Here's the most recent:

8" Tablet on EVO remote. Made it work. Look.

Hope that helps, and hope you can find a good solution to get that tablet on there!

Thanks so much for doing this! I was a little skeptical about the measurements I found on the other site saying it would extend to 5.6". I would imagine, before too long, companies will start making adapters to fit larger devices. The Mavmount for Mavic is a perfect example of how to accommodate this so maybe those guys will come up with something!

Thanks again for taking time for all your help!

Hi Wayne,

Your post has me completely confused. Are you saying that you're not experiencing any of the problems like tilted horizon, camera moving by itself while on the ground and jittery footage while yawing in the air even after their last FW update?

Sorry about the confusion - that's EXACTLY what I'm saying. I have zero complaints with the EVO flight performance, or with the camera/gymbal. At higher speeds, I DO see an occasional propeller "ghost", but that is easily mitigated with a 5° downward tilt. That, and the lack of a lanyard attachment, are the only niggles I've experienced. I have yet to try the "advanced" tracking modes, so I can't speak to the orbit, tripod, or follow-me performance.

All in all, the EVO is SO superior to my (gone and forgotten) MP - and, I can fly it in my back yard, NFZ be damned <grin>

I wouldn’t say I switched, as I kept my Mavic Pros and added an Evo to my fleet. I love the Mavic Pro, but the camera is so much better on the Evo. Flight characteristics are very close between the two, but I do prefer my Evo.

I just purchased an Evo and printed out a really nice tablet holder, it works flawlessly. It's a bit heavy with a tablet, so I also printed a lanyard ring to help stabilize the controller and take weight off the back. I heard you can buy a holder for around $25. Not sure about the lanyard ring. If you have access to a 3D printer like I do, I can send you the files so you can print them yourself.
