I read in the user manual that this works between 30-300cm and turns on when you start the bird.

Can you turn it off, or does it stay on all the time?

Also, I assume it won't affect flight over water as long as you're above the 300 cm altitude, right?

I don't think you can disable it, and it is only effective between 30 - 300cm. After that I think the altimeter takes over.
