That has been my experience as well with the stock controller, quieter props, and over open ocean at 100' AGL. The range under perfect conditions is only limited by battery life.

That is very odd, is that a distance limit or altitude limit? Do you have beginner mode turned on? I haven't heard of any of them limited that severely.
