Controller features versus smartphone features

I’m brand new to EVO, getting one only last week (trained on Phantom 4 Pro +). I don’t want to use a smartphone or tablet to fly unless I need some of the features such as tracking, waypoints etc which appear to be accessible only with a smartphone or tablet attached. My question is, apart from those special features, will any settings you set up before flight on a smartphone or tablet be remembered by the aircraft and controller if you switch everything off and then on again, without the smartphone later? I ask because I have the 12.9in iPad Pro which is really too heavy to mount (yes, I know it can be done) and because I don’t want to upgrade my old smartphone, which I use only for phone calls and texting.

Nope. It immediately stops what it's doing and returns to manual control. However, you can use a longer cable. Set it up and put it in a backpack or lay it down on a table if you aren't walking along.

Most all of the custom settings on either the controller or a phone or tablet are reset whenever you turn the power off, and do not survive a reboot! Plan on wasting the first minute or two of battery life resetting all of your custom flight settings every time, in a preflight reset list!

Might just get a smaller tablet just for the Evo.

Interested in seeing how it works out.
Me, too! GearBest's return policy isn't the greatest! Looks like a well powered, full resolution Android Tablet, with a mini HDMI port, and GPS, ideal for drone flying!

Wonder if this tablet would work?
Android 4 is the very oldest Android version supported by Explorer, depending upon hardware. As noted above, that hardware is very sketchy. My now archived 2014 Samsung Galaxy Note 2 runs on Android 4.3, and Explorer wouldn't even install: "Your device isn't compatible with this version."

CostCo is selling the 8" 2017 Samsung Tab A (Wifi only) in the store for $129.99 ($50 off)
Picked one up Friday, and it works great, and also has GPS. Major improvement over iOS. All the iOS bugs already fixed! Recorded flight logs, and toggling north up OFF on the enlarged map now also sticks on the mini map, too! Gearbest tablet won't be here until March 26th. :( I couldn't wait!
