Autel RID implementation apparently falls short.

Skysafe study reveals some drone manufacturers fail to meet RID standards. So why did FAA grant them compliance?

Funny, I submitted my RID to the FAA and they said It was compliant. I have an EVO II V3 model. But I read the same report, and it sounds like Autel dropped the ball again. No surprise there.

Here is a quote from SkySafe Study...

Autel's ultimate implementation demise is its broken elevation values; drones running the firmware version which does not send an ICAO prefixed serial number, that is, those with the 12-character factory serial number referenced earlier, send their height (elevation) data as a negative value instead of a positive value, leading to an "upside down" elevation profile.

Autel has been upside down for a long time!!!

The FAA doesn't do any testing. They leave it up to the manufacturers to just fill out paperwork claiming that it works and is compliant. There is no verification of reality done by the FAA.

We've known something was wrong with this for a while now, but most people were happy with the 'karens' not being able to snoop so not many folks actually complained.

This however should be an easy fix for Autel.

Don't hold your breath...

Just another example of how CEO Max is allowing his customers to wither-on-the-vine. All he wants to sell is Dragonfish and it SUCKS AT TIME OF RELEASE AND WILL NOT BE FINISHED ANY BETTER THAN THE EVO II V3 WAS.

So the report mentions that Autel is sending a negative number for altitude which could be borking up the scanners.

I wonder if that only happens in the western hemisphere? Where a - longitude shows up, if that negative in longitude screws with their calculation of altitude as well? Since this is developed in China they may never notice it (since their both positive latitude and positive longitude there)

Can they be that ignorant?
I doubt it but with Autel, I suppose it is possible.
I've seen weird stuff like that happen before... folks just don't know cuz where they implement GPS stuff it's all positive numbers.

I've had issues where i can't enter my zip code on websites because it starts with a 0. :) They had no idea there were valid ZIP's with 0's as the first character.

So, on my quest to dig more into this.... I finally decided to fire up an old network analysis box I had that has Wireshark running on it and a wifi adapter that 'plays nice' with 'things regular people shouldn't do with wifi'. :)

I can actually trace out the OPENDRONEID packets from my Autel Evo Max (haven't looked at the 640t yet, i'll do that tomorrow) and I see it's sending the packets and a bunch of the data is 'correct' for the most part. So I'm not 100% sure why various apps choke on it.

Some stuff is wrong, like Altitude is showing 2000' AGL which sitting in my office with 17 satellites the drone is neither 'any meaningful AGL' nor is it MSL, cuz my MSL here is about 310'.

here's a dump of what I captured, with some info munged (like my actual lat/long, and radio ID munged with XX or NN's).
