hand launch

You can't. The motors won't start. Gimbal has to still and level for motors to start.
 
just hold the evo level in your hand
start the motors and lower the evo a few inches and the motors will detect an altitude change and will spin up enough to launch

Do you have to calibrate the gimbal after a hand launch? can't you boot the bird on a balanced surface first, then pick it up?

no need to calibrate the gimbal,and NO you cant lift after having the motors started,doing so will make the motors spin full speed
