Its a matter of getting used to it, your suggestion is fine and works1. Place the hub with the cord at left, insert the first battery at left socket, 2nd at enter, 3rd at right.
2. Place the center part of battery on the "groove" of the hub then it will be very easy to slide in horizontally .
3. As the room in between batteries is small, don't hold the battery at sides. Put your indexes at end of battery and thumbs at edge of hub, a slight squeeze will do the job.
4. Shake slightly to confirm the connection, don't pull up or it will disconnect again.
