Thanks for the comment Butch, it was my first time trying to fly while riding (as a passenger) in a moving vehicle. Add to that, the 25mph gusts, and it was a bit challenging. The EVO did fine, but fine motion was a lost-cause.
Anyway, the communications station was a link in the former Microwave Telecoms system. It is still active, but it appears to only serve Edwards AFB (the horn antennas facing the EVO on approach are pointing directly at Edwards Main Base), possibly as a backup to other Telecom methods? Of course, this is all speculation. The site was in disrepair when last I was in the area, several years ago... So the fact that it is not in disrepair now is what I'm judging the "active" nature of it on.
