Maybe if I didn't need the FAA's permission to fly my drone at under 100 feet five miles away from an airport would help. Makes sense if one is flying higher than that, but flying below tree tops shouldn't need a waiver that far away from the airport each time I want to fly - especially for people that have passed the FAA test.

I totally agree. The general rule for aircraft to fly below 500 feet is for the purpose of take off and landing. (exceptions for rotorcraft). All that said you shouldn't find full size aircraft flying below 500 feet except in very low density
