I drove down this street last year.... This is a long way from the house I’m selling — on the other side of a huge mountain. What the media doesn’t tell you (bad for ratings) this large area is in Lava Zone 1 — the highest alert level. Living there is borderline insane, it shouldn’t be allowed. Hilo is Lava Zone 3, rarely under threat. LZ-1, sits atop a 300,000 yr. old pool of shifting magma. House insurance is outrageous, a mortgage is almost impossible — most home sales are cash. In 1960, the nearby town of Kapoho was completely covered by a huge fissure-eruption. There’s no visible evidence it ever existed...
An eruption is in progress along Kīlauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone. Since late afternoon May 3, at least three small fissure vents have opened in Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower Puna district. At this time, activity consists mostly of vigorous lava spattering. Additional outbreaks in the area are likely.
