I drove down this street last year.... This is a long way from the house I’m selling — on the other side of a huge mountain. What the media doesn’t tell you (bad for ratings) this large area is in Lava Zone 1 — the highest alert level. Living there is borderline insane, it shouldn’t be allowed. Hilo is Lava Zone 3, rarely under threat. LZ-1, sits atop a 300,000 yr. old pool of shifting magma. House insurance is outrageous, a mortgage is almost impossible — most home sales are cash. In 1960, the nearby town of Kapoho was completely covered by a huge fissure-eruption. There’s no visible evidence it ever existed...

An eruption is in progress along Kīlauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone. Since late afternoon May 3, at least three small fissure vents have opened in Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower Puna district. At this time, activity consists mostly of vigorous lava spattering. Additional outbreaks in the area are likely.

Cool, but scary video!
Hope your safe Hilo. Stay out of trouble. Mother Earth is getting cranky all over the globe.
Time to build a drone to fit families in it soon

Yep I might have 40 below sometimes in the winter but I think I would rather have that then the hot lava flowing through my yard :)

I just read a post from the guy that had the drone registration struck down in court (John A Taylor) about his sister living there. His sister lives in the Leilani Estates subdivision where the volcano is erupting. He said traditional media is doing very little to provide updates. Neighborhood is under mandatory evacuation, so almost everyone had bugged out. People are FURIOUS that they won't let drones fly.

I'm sure thats all they need is a bunch of drones flying around ground any aircraft that might be doing some good.

CD Helo’s are flying all over the area too. I have a friend who lives close by. He might have to evacuate to my house. That said, Hawaii is not known for the quality of governance. It’s truly awful. Also, Volcano National Park boundary isn’t too far away, flying over that area is a felony! I saw a tourist get arrested flying a DJI in the park. You can get updates, but this area is remote, very little internet access, spotty cell coverage.

Hey bud
I passed on some of your info to John and gave him the link you provided. One other fellow (there has to be one of these guys) asked if I have a source for the claim that flying in the National Park is a felony?
So is there any documentation to this so I can show him? LOL I told him if my buddy said so its true but some paper work would be better :)

Ok, a friend that works in volcano national park clarified it is NOT a felony, it’s a misdemeanor punishable by up to $1000 fine. It depends on how flagrant. The guy I saw arrested acted like a jerk, and was recklessly flying near a big crowd in an area close to a big lava pool. They did take him away somewhere, LOL, I didn’t hang around!
