Can you use a standard controller with a V3?

I've been wondering since my experience with the smart controller is so poor (won't upload way points, can't see it on a sunny day, battery runs out after 2 flights, sticks feel horrible, just a crummy experience all the way around.
So my question is can you use a standard controller with phone for the V3?
