“Chinese drones potential source of data breach”

Kind of old news. The US government has banned them for some time now.

Popular Chinese-Made Drone Is Found to Have Security Weakness

This new article published today might-or-might-not be outlining entirely new vulnerabilities found, but I think it's much more informative in that it tries to provide some context (navigating the legal policies between two counties not exactly on great terms with each other) in terms of the design choices DJI made.

But while it suggests that the choices might not necessarily be nefarious, that does not change the fact that 1] the breadth of their data collection from American users is opaque to Google oversight (and by extension the American gov't), and 2] they are required by local law to provide all access to their data to a frenemy* gov't known to be engaging in advanced cyber-warfare with us.

So yeah, it makes total sense for the U.S. gov't to ban DJI from it's own usage. Whether this justifies a ban of American private usage is much less clear.

* This is admittedly an oversimplification, not to mention an understatement of the international political moment.
