Santa Chiara del Tirso: the village of the dam
Santa Chiara del Tirso
In the valley of the Tirso river there are the remains of the ghost town of Santa Chiara. The village housed the employees of the Sardinian Electric Company, about 450 people, employed in the nearby Santa Chiara dam. At the end of the 1980s, with the dismissal of the hydroelectric plant of the old dam, the small town was abandoned.
The employees asked to be able to buy the houses, but - as they tell us - ENEL preferred to sell the whole agglomeration as a whole to a single company, and not to individuals. Not finding buyers, the country met the end that we can see: that is, abandonment.
Today, passing through a gate, it is still possible to visit the remains of the town: about thirty buildings in total abandonment, surrounded by vegetation and partly vandalized - including what was once the town's cinema - and the church, in good condition. of conservation and still used for some holidays.
In recent years, the center has also been used for urban games and recreational activities such as airsoft. On some of the buildings there are writings (such as "pharmacy", "Islamic school", "hospital") added later by those who use it as a simulated war field. A few steps from the village is the old manor house, a beautiful stone building now used as a shelter for animals.
