Spontaneous RTH keeps crashing into trees

Something's not right with my EVO1* because it keeps wanting to RTH and then doesn't respond to the RC pause button and so crashes into tree foliage about 40ft up as it rises. On the plus side, it crashed to earth (short grass) three times today from about that height and survived all three without even losing a rotor.

Anyhow, since I fly quite a lot underneath tree canopies, I need to get a grip on this. What else apart from a dying battery could send the EVO into spontaneous RTH mode?

And if the pause button does nothing, what else could stop it climbing into the tree canopy?

Is it possible to set a RTH height of 30ft - which I realise would be pretty dumb in most situations?

*I guess it could be my fault as I fitted a small plastic sun shade just above the gimbal to keep the rotor shadows out of shot - and took care to ensure that the forward-pointing OA sensors on either side of the nose weren't obstructed. It seemed to handle fine with this mod…until it didn't.
